INNOVATION LAUNCHES NEW HALO WAVE ATTENUATOR TO PROVIDE COMPREHENSIVE
PROTECTION OF SHORELINES AND MARINAS
West Caldwell,
NJ, September 23, 2003 – Elemental Innovation, Inc, a leading
engineering firm, announced the launch of its latest invention,
the HALO™ wave attenuator. The eco-friendly, tunable HALO
wave attenuator outperforms static, conventional technologies
for less than half the cost. By absorbing rather than deflecting
the force of waves, HALO works with nature to dissipate waves,
prevent sand erosion, and promote sand accretion. HALO utilizes
structural interference, buoyancy, and wave absorption to diminish
wave forceand protect coastlines.
"Conventional coastal protection systems just don’t work. Breakwaters,
groins, and jetties are immovable structures that cannot be tuned to the varying
wave conditions along a coast. HALO has modular, tunable panels that can be customized
and rapidly deployed to dissipate any wave and restore a beach or harbor,” notes
Justin Bishop, President of Elemental Innovation, Inc.
“
After Hurricane Isabel hit the Eastern United States recently, many beach
communities were devastated by the destructive effects of beach erosion.
Taxpayers spend millions of dollars maintaining their beaches, and replacing
sand only offers temporary relief. Marinas and harbors experience unique
problems as well. Older technologies such as static, concrete structures
can’t compete with the force of boat wakes and storm waves. The HALO
wave attenuator is the only proven option that can provide total coastal
protection, while actuallyreplenishing the natural coastline. By utilizing
its revolutionary design, the HALO will prevent environmental damage and
reduce the yearly maintenance costs of coastal protection,” Mr. Bishop
adds.
The patented HALO is a concentration of vertically oriented, linear low density,
non-toxic polyethylene panels that are secured to each other by a rubber cable.
The panels are connected to form a vertical and horizontal face in a row. Rows
of panels are connected by hoop connectors joined in the center of each row.
This allows the structure to
recoil under extreme wave conditions and then rest. The hoops allow the force
exerted upon the HALO to be transferred to the energy absorbing cables and dramatically
reduces the stress on the structure. Since the panels of the HALO are tapered,
the progress of a wave is slowed and the jets of water dissipate between rows
of panels.
Another benefit of the HALO are its anchors which can be driven into any soil
type, allowing for tremendous flexibility in system placement and quick deployment.
The HALO wave attenuator is the latest invention by Justin Bishop. Mr. Bishop
is the inventor and original patent owner of the WhisprWave® wave attenuator,
which has been successfully deployed for four years and can now be seen in the
Thames river in Connecticut. While the WhisprWave can reduce a 5 second wave
by up to 40% in
height, tremendous improvements can be found in the HALO, which can reduce a
wave’s height by twice as much. In fact, the HALO is the only modular composite
attenuator capable of reducing a 5 second wave by an unprecedented 80% in height.
Extensive test studies have been conducted on the HALO at Stevens Institute of
Technology in Hoboken, NJ and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA.
About Elemental Innovation, Inc.
A leading engineering firm, Elemental Innovation, Inc. provides proven coastal
protection through the ecofriendly, tunable HALO wave attenuator. For less than
half the cost, the HALO wave attenuator out performs conventional technologies.
By absorbing rather than deflecting the force of waves, HALO eliminates 80% of
a wave’s height to protect beaches and harbors. Before founding Elemental
Innovation in 2000, Justin Bishop designed and patented the WhisprWaveTM wave
attenuator. After selling the WhisprWave business, he then developed more advanced
technology and designed the HALO (formerly Tempest).
